I was formally trained in the 1980's as a student of sculpture, but quickly changed my focus to oils on canvas. Initially a traditional artist-I enjoyed painting animal portraits, this got me familiar with brushes, mediums and technique. Now that I had a good foundation I began experimenting with a looser style, falling in love with abstraction. Blindly sweeping my charcoal over a blank surface was my first step and what emerged next formed the foundation of my piece.
My work is filled with texture, shapes, markings and much color, from brights to soft neutrals and crisp whites. Images and familiar shapes inevitably emerge, whether intentional or not. It is the viewer who determines it's meaning and especially how the work makes them feel.
